How to Apply
The Application Process for Social Security Disability or SSI Benefits
There are three ways in which you can apply for Social Security disability benefits through the Social Security Administration. Potential claimants may choose to call the SSA directly via the 800 number, go to the Social Security office in their local area, or apply for benefits via the web. A skilled Denver disability lawyer can further advise you with respect to the application process if you determine that you need additional assistance.
If you have a preference for completing your application via the web, you can find the application at www.socialsecurity.gov/applyfordisability/adult.htm. Keep in mind, however, that if you are applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you cannot complete that application online.
Regardless of whether you decide to complete your SSI or Social Security disability application via phone or in person, you must call the Administration’s 800 number (1-800-772-1213). If you decide to visit your local Social Security office in order to complete the application in person, the employee who answers the 800 number will make an appointment for you and give you directions to the appropriate local office. It is at that time that he or she should advise you with respect to what documents you need to bring in as well.
If you choose to apply for benefits via phone, you will be advised as to a specific date and time that you can expect a telephone call from someone at the agency who will take your application over the telephone. Once you have completed the application portion of the process, that application will be sent to you in the mail for your signature, and once you have signed it, you will then need to send it back to the agency.
As you go through the process of attempting to get benefits, one of the most important things that you should remember is to give the Administration any and all information that it asks for in a simple and clear manner. Additionally, you should always be honest and make sure that you do not over-exaggerate or minimize your disability.
